A special election would hurt the children: It is a disservice to District 1, LAUSD, black, brown and other students to have Marguerite LaMotte’s seat remain vacant for 6 to 8 months, especially with so many critical items that will be decided in the first half of the year, like the 2014-2015 school year budget, Title I funding, the Local Control Funding Formula, implementation of the Common Core Curriculum, a $6 billion facilities upgrade bond program and the billion-dollar iPad project.
A special election is unnecessary and would take money from the classroom: A special election would take millions out of the classroom with the regularly scheduled election just months later in March of 2015.
The special/corporate interests want to steal our seat: The political reality is such that a special election puts the same interest groups that Ms. LaMotte and so many civil rights/education groups fight against with a significant strategic advantage. It would allow the special/corporate interest the best opportunity they’ve ever had to “steal the seat” by flooding the district with billionaire funding.
Dr. McKenna is the caretaker the community is united behind: Dr. George McKenna is the most qualified and respected educator, ready to lead District 1 on Day 1, and has committed to completing Ms. LaMotte’s unexpired term to June 30, 2015.
